Neighbors Helping Neighbors: The Community Impact of Volunteerism

At Boston Cares, we believe in the power of people coming together to build stronger, more connected communities. Every day, volunteers across Greater Boston give their time and energy to support neighbors and create meaningful change. Whether in classrooms, community centers, food pantries, or green spaces, volunteerism has an important role to play in uplifting the community.

In 2024, Boston Cares volunteers showed up in force to support our partners, schools, and neighborhoods. Together, we:

  • Contributed 50,000 hours of service
  • Filled 19,600+ volunteer spots across 5,100 projects
  • Partnered with 30+ companies for community engagement
  • Supported 150 schools and nonprofit organizations

And these numbers translated into real, tangible outcomes:

  • 500,000+ people served through food access programs
  • 100,000 youth supported through tutoring, school beautification, and resource distribution
  • 6,000 adult learners supported
  • 1.5 tons of trash and garden debris cleared from shared spaces

We estimate that our volunteers and programs reached over 1 million people in 2024

Behind every number is a person. Their stories inspire us every single day.

“Boston Cares sparked a deeper love for community engagement and understanding of social issues.”
— Erin, Volunteer since 2009

“Boston Cares volunteers play a crucial role in increasing our food pantry capacity… [and] allow our organization to serve more families and maximize its impact and reach within the community.”
— American Red Cross Food Pantry

“There is no question that the volunteer support impacts our bottom line. We are now more confident thinking about our services and responding to more needs if we are able to also envision these in the context of leveraging volunteer support.”
— Four Corners Main Streets
