Since the Pandemic Food Insecurity has risen significantly making the need for our partners who fight hunger and homelessness greater than ever. Through everything these partners have put the needs of the Boston community before it all and remained reliable for those who need them. In this recent Boston Globe Article, it outlines the findings of a food insecurity study that took place December 2021 through February 2022. The results showed that 32% of the state’s adult population is food insecure. You can read about these findings in the Greater Boston Food Bank’s Food Equity and Access report. Boston Cares has worked in support of our partners who have dedicated their time and hard work to fighting these rising numbers and we would like to recognize some of these partners and the work they do. Below you will read about four partners and the amazing work they have committed to.
Revere Food Pantry
City of Revere’s Food Hub Coordinator, Megan Witter, gave us a rundown of her time since joining the food pantry’s team. She began volunteering in May 2020 and got the job as the Food Pantry operations facilitator because of the skyrocketing needs. The First Congregational Church of Revere Food Pantry went from receiving 8,000 lbs. of food a month to 40,000 lbs. a month. From July of 2020 to current Revere Food Pantry has distributed over 1 million lbs. of food to residents. Along with the increase in food there was also a change in the food that was being ordered so that clients would have healthy food options each week. This meant ordering more fruits and vegetables and eggs for families. The Pantry also physically moved from the First Congregational Church to the nearby Middle School and finally to the Revere Food Hub, where the food pantry remains.
