The Richard Family: Daily Point of Light

Today on the first anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings, Points of Light has fittingly named the Richard Family of Dorchester its “Daily Point of Light”. Daily Point of Light Awards are given to individuals who find innovative ways to meet community needs; efforts which often lead to long-term solutions and impact social problems in their local communities.  The Richard family was honored both for their extraordinary grace in the aftermath of the bombings and their long-time volunteer service in the community.

Martin Richard, Peacemaker

The Boston Globe’s David Abel wrote a moving two-part piece about the Richard family this week.

Next Monday on Marathon Day, the members of Team MR8 will run to raise funds for the new Martin W. Richard Charitable Foundation. Its broad mission is to spread Martin’s message of peace by investing in education, athletics and community. As of this morning, $918,776 has been raised.

Larry Marchese, a longtime friend of the Richards who volunteers as a spokesperson for the family told Points of Light: “Martin was a true peacemaker. He was an outdoorsy and athletic little boy with a high appreciation for fairness. He looked out for other kids, tried to make sure everyone was included in games and other activities, and it was common for him to moderate disputes on the playground. His school even honored him with the designation ‘peacemaker’ when he was in second grade.”

Here at Boston Cares, we wish you all a day of peace.
